A rare standing human figure representing an ancestor. It is possible that this was originally a handle for a chisel or other form of tool however, there is no obvious attachment point for a blade It might also be the top finial of a ceremonial dance staff. The carving style and quality are indicative of a very early piece – probably pre-contact and definitely carved with non metallic tools. Mimika People, Irian Jaya, Indonesian New Guinea, Melanesia.
